Open vs. enclosed trailer: which should I use?

Use an open trailer when easy loading access, lower empty weight and equipment flexibility matter most; use an enclosed trailer when weather protection, containment and privacy matter more. Neither type is better for every job.

What is an open trailer best for?

An open trailer is usually the practical choice for vehicles, compact equipment, mowers, UTVs and loads that benefit from open side access.

It is easier to inspect the cargo during stops and usually weighs less than a comparable enclosed trailer.

What is an enclosed trailer best for?

An enclosed trailer is usually the practical choice for furniture, boxed goods, motorcycles, tools and cargo that needs containment or weather protection.

Interior height, rear-door opening, wall-to-wall width and wheel-box clearance determine what actually fits.

Does an enclosed trailer keep everything dry?

An enclosed trailer provides substantially more protection than an open deck, but it should not be treated as climate-controlled or completely immune to leaks, condensation or road moisture.

Sensitive items should still be wrapped, secured and kept off potentially wet surfaces.
