Car hauler vs. equipment trailer: what is the difference?

A car hauler is designed around loading and securing vehicles, while an equipment trailer is designed around machinery and working loads; many open trailers can do both when the deck, ramps, ratings and tie-down system match the cargo.

What makes a trailer useful for cars?

A useful car hauler needs adequate deck length and tire-track width, a workable loading angle, rated securement points and clearance for doors, bumpers and low bodywork.

Drive-over fenders can make the full deck width more usable for wide vehicles, but the vehicle still has to clear ramps and hardware.

What makes a trailer useful for equipment?

A useful equipment trailer needs enough payload, deck space, ramp capacity and securement access for the machine and every attachment carried with it.

Measure with buckets, blades and mower decks in transport position. Include fuel and attachments in the loaded weight.

Can one trailer do both jobs?

Yes. A properly configured open trailer can haul both vehicles and equipment when each individual load fits and the complete towing setup remains within its limits.

JH’s 20-foot PJ is rented as a combined car and equipment hauler for this reason.
