What should I measure before choosing a trailer?
Measure the load’s total length, widest point, wheel or track width, ground clearance and height in its travel position.
Buckets, mower decks, bumpers, spare tires and other attachments can change whether a load fits. For vehicles, measure the wheelbase and tire track as well as the body width.
How much trailer payload do I need?
Required payload must exceed the weight of the cargo, fuel, attachments and everything else carried on the trailer.
Do not confuse GVWR with payload. GVWR includes the trailer itself. Payload is what remains after the trailer’s empty weight and installed equipment are accounted for.

- Loose tools or materials
- Winches, boxes or accessories added to the trailer
When is a wider or longer trailer useful?
Extra deck space is useful when it improves tire placement, securement access or weight positioning, but unused size adds weight and can make the trailer harder to maneuver.
Choose enough room to load and secure the cargo correctly. Buying or renting the largest available trailer is not automatically safer.
